This is not a waiting room

We speak in whispers
Loaded questions, cautious truths
Waiting on the Newark train to London
Our fast route to city life
We try too hard not to impress
Your regular journey
My secret trip to the capital
We share some things
Disagree with others
Talk for the length of time it takes
Unhurried travellers
Watching the harried and the stressed
We take our conversation
Seriously we are well-seasoned
In the art of talking to strangers
Touch on topics, politics
Steer clear of religion and immigration
We wait in a room not made for waiting, wait for a train
Not made for travelling
Dirt, discomfort and delays
We think of the ways we would change things
Make things better
Our conversation, interrupted, lady needing a seat,
I rise to my feet
Pass on the thanks for passing the time, the entertainment
Walk the length of the platform
Raise eyes to lengthened shadows and setting sun
Another hour to wait
As always, arrived too early, never late
Time passed, as always, meeting strangers
Tempting fate.
