And then we talk, and then we smile
How we talk, lengthened out words and slurred imaginings
Our hands speak first, wiser than what we say
We are tired and not quite sober now
Perhaps exhaustion blurs our thoughts or the red wine at our feet
It is uncertain, but we smile, share dreams, share moments
Whatever we say, we are close; we know what words come next
We can predict to the point, where what we say doesn’t matter
We were there, shared thoughts, shared emotions
And then we rise to unsteady feet and at some point in the evening
We begin the process of parting, say our farewells
Ready ourselves for the next time
We do it all without thought
Past moments, future gatherings, all gain time and momentum
And our exchange, that is friendship,
At the end of the evening, at the end of the meal,
Which is now over, never ends
Begins again with the next time, the next meeting
