Saturday afternoon

You blink the daylight away

Look round, glance at the stranger

Try not to stare

Full sunlight glare

Caught you unaware,

As you walked from the doorway

You can sense the danger.

An early summer’s day.

Unexpected, heat and flush.

Bars spill out

Hen parties pout

That drunken lout

Walks towards you, wants his say

Fists clench, feet stumble, you rush

Light in your trainers, aim to get away

The beer on his breath

Catches your cheek

You glance away, meek

Let him know you’re weak.

Keep the clenched fists at bay

I’m not the one for an easy death,

Let him pick out new prey.

As he flexes his fingers

Crushed into fists

Eyes blinked by mist

I’m not on this list

Eyes to the floor, keep walking, get away.

Don’t pause, don’t panic, don’t linger
