Sleeper
You fell asleep in my arms once,
Like a child, dependent.
Your mouth lightly closed,
Your eyes flickering,
Gazing into dreamscapes
And the roaring ocean of memories.
Your breath was a soft sigh
In a still room,
Which turned with the ticking of the clock.
Hushed,
I watched your innocence
As sleep erased the guilts of daylight
And calmness spread.
In your dreams you walked
On green plains
And in paradises, with
the sea echoing in your ears.
I, alone, watched over you
Touched and shared your dreamings,
As time wandered slowly
And the clock wound down.
For a moment we inhabited
A safe world.
Protected from the harshness and truths,
Hidden in depths of make-believe.
While you slept and I
watched, there was no suffering.
But time elapsed
And you woke,
To rub sleep misted eyes
And break the fine web of dreams,
Which had enveloped us,
Obliterating brutal reality.
