Island
Oasis
Green-brown paradise,
Summer-shadowed waterfall of coolness,
Inscribed with childhood memories.
You are the roaring ocean of my midnights.
At first youthful playground.
You are the place of children
Filled full with laughter,
You are a coloured roundabout;
Kaleidoscope of playtimes.
Later you provide
Sanctuary.
An island of silence,
Where the birdsong filters through shade.
Sometimes squirrels dance
For the benefit of the last lonely dreamers.
Later still you are the childhood stealer,
Where adolescence is stripped away.
And dreams sacrificed,
Cruelly, to a strange god.
Now you are the paradoxical paradise.
The place where all truths lie.
Untold.
You will always remain to me
A place of doubts and solitudes,
Thief and wise-man,
who offered sanctity and stillness,
When no one else stood still.
