A summer which was on fire
You read of it in papers
We saw the dropped match, grassfire
Fled to safety, talked later
Of what we saw
We witnessed the blaze’s thirst
How the spark touched the dry grass
Into flame, after a burst
Of power we couldn’t pass
For a moment
Trapped, witness to the burning
Bushes, trees, fleeing creatures
Dried undergrowth, fast catching
Conflagration, Mother Nature’s
Retribution
